About Argiolaus silas silarus (Druce, 1885)
This butterfly species has a scientific name of Argiolaus silas silarus (Druce, 1885). Males have a wingspan ranging from 32 to 37 mm, while females have a wingspan between 34 and 41 mm. In warmer regions of its range, adult butterflies are active on the wing throughout the entire year. In the southern portion of the species' range, adults are active on the wing from September to January. The larvae of this species feed on a variety of mistletoe species: specifically Moquiniella rubra, Erianthemum dregei, and Loranthus usuiensis. This species is found from the southeastern Nama Karoo in the Eastern Cape, which includes the Somerset East and Bedford areas, and extends along the eastern littoral up to northern KwaZulu-Natal. It occurs in spekboomveld, coastal savannah, and lowland forest habitats.
