The squacco heron, scientifically known as Ardeola ralloides (Scopoli, 1769), is a small heron species. Its total body length ranges from 44 to 47 cm (17+1⁄2 to 18+1⁄2 inches), with the main body itself measuring 20 to 23 cm (8 to 9 inches). It has a wingspan that falls between 80 and 92 cm (31+1⁄2 to 36 inches). This species originates from the Old World, and breeds in southern Europe and the Greater Middle East.
