About Arctostaphylos insularis Greene & Parry
Arctostaphylos insularis is a large, spreading shrub. It grows to over 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) tall, and is known to reach more than 5 metres (16 ft 5 in) in width. This species has waxy, reddish bark, and its smaller twigs sometimes bear bristly glandular hairs. Its leaves are shiny green, smooth, generally oval-shaped, and slightly convex, reaching up to around 4.5 centimetres (1+3⁄4 in) in length. The shrub produces many dense clustered inflorescences made up of urn-shaped flowers when it blooms. Its fruit is an orange-brown drupe that can grow up to 1.5 centimetres (5⁄8 in) wide. Arctostaphylos insularis grows in the chaparral, oak woodland, and coastal pine forest habitats of its native island.
