About Arbutus arizonica (A.Gray) Sarg.

Arbutus arizonica, commonly called Arizona madrone, is a tree species belonging to the heath family. It is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its range stretches along the Sierra Madre Occidental cordillera, starting from the Madrean Sky Islands of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, and extending south as far as Jalisco. This species has been recorded in Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, and Sinaloa, with one isolated population located in Tamaulipas. Arbutus arizonica grows to a maximum height of 45 feet (14 meters) and has pinkish-brown bark. It produces orange-red berry fruits, which are edible for humans and used by some indigenous peoples.
