About Araschnia doris Leech, 1892

This description of Araschnia doris Leech, 1892 is sourced from Seitz. The species (illustrated as male 64e and female 64f) closely resembles Araschnia burejana, and also brings to mind Araschnia burejana strigosa, a subspecies of Araschnia burejana. It differs from both of these by having more rounded wings and different markings on the distal marginal area of the hindwing. The blue-spotted submarginal band found on the distal marginal area of the hindwing of the comparable species is absent in A. doris; this band is replaced by a row of rounded or partially quadrangular black spots. The underside of the hindwing of A. doris also has some key differences, which supports the conclusion that A. doris is a distinct species. A. doris is found in Central and West China, and individuals are active in June and July.
