The spider species Araneus diadematus, described by Clerck in 1757, has multiple common names: European garden spider, cross orbweaver, diadem spider, orangie, cross spider, and crowned orb weaver. It is sometimes referred to as the pumpkin spider, though this common name is also used for a separate species, Araneus marmoreus. It is an orb-weaver spider that is native to Europe and was introduced to North America. A. diadematus has a holarctic distribution, found throughout Europe and across North America, ranging from southern Canada to Mexico, and from British Columbia to Newfoundland.
