About Aquilegia desertorum (M.E.Jones) Cockerell ex A.Heller
Commonly known as desert columbine, Aquilegia desertorum is a small columbine species that reaches 15โ30 cm (5.9โ11.8 in) in height. Unlike most other columbines, it does not grow with an upright habit. It produces nodding red flowers that have yellow central petals. Its yellow stamens extend out past the central petals, and its straight red flower spurs are broad at the base. Aquilegia desertorum is native to New Mexico, Arizona, and southwestern Utah. It grows in open rocky limestone areas with available seepage or other moisture, at altitudes between 2,000โ2,500 m (6,600โ8,200 ft). Its flowering season runs from May to October, and the species is primarily pollinated by hummingbirds. The Kayenta Navajo have used Aquilegia desertorum as a ceremonial aid.
