About Aplysia vaccaria Winkler, 1955
Aplysia vaccaria, commonly called the black sea hare, can grow to a very large size. The longest recorded specimen measured 99 cm (39 inches) when fully extended while crawling, and weighed nearly 14 kg (31 lb). Compared to Aplysia californica, this species has a relatively firm body, and its parapodia are joined behind the siphon. Unlike many other members of the same family and genus, Aplysia vaccaria cannot produce ink. This sea hare species is distributed in the northeast Pacific Ocean, found off the coast of California (United States) and Baja California (Mexico), including the Gulf of California.
