About Aplysia nigrocincta E.von Martens, 1880
The scientific name of this species is Aplysia nigrocincta E.von Martens, 1880. The description below is based on the original German description of a preserved spirit specimen. In its preserved contracted state, the specimen measured 17 mm long, 11 mm high, and 7 mm wide. Its body is smooth and light brown. Black coloring marks the free edges of the foot lobes, the margin of the foot sole, and the edge of the relatively large mantle (shield) opening. This black coloring is usually continuous, but may occasionally be somewhat mottled. The shell is strongly arched and relatively large, with a vivid amber-yellow color. When light passes through the mantle shield, the shell appears reddish. The shell is spoon-shaped, with a shallow notch and a strongly incurved tip. It measures 11.5 mm in length, 8 mm in width, and 5 mm in height, and occupies more than half the total length of the contracted animal. This species occurs in waters off Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean.
