About Aplocheilus panchax (Hamilton, 1822)
The blue panchax, also called the whitespot, with the scientific name Aplocheilus panchax, is a common freshwater fish. Thanks to its high adaptability, it lives in a wide variety of habitats. This species is native to southern Asia, ranging from Pakistan and India through Malaysia to Indonesia. It has also been found in two hot springs in Singapore, and is commonly seen in rivers and estuaries around Johor Bahru. The species can be identified by a white spot on its head. It can grow up to 9 cm (3.5 in) in length, usually stays near the water surface, and controls mosquito populations by feeding on mosquito larvae.
