About Apamea lithoxylaea (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
This species, Apamea lithoxylaea, has a wingspan ranging from 43 to 50 mm. Its forewing is whitish ochreous, with a faint pale brown wash; the veins are brown before the termen. The inner and outer lines are pale, edged with brown, and are more or less interrupted except on the costa. The inner line has sharp, long teeth pointing outwards between veins, while the outer line is marked by a double row of brown vein dots. There is a broad, diffuse brown median shade that ends at the submedian fold, where it has a distinct brown margin. The submarginal line is sharply dentate, preceded by olive brown wedge-shaped marks, and followed by darker brown dentate marks that extend to the margin, being strongest on both folds. The orbicular and reniform spots are barely marked, and are separated by the brown median shade. The hindwing is whitish ochreous, with brown veins and a brown cell spot, plus a diffuse brownish submarginal cloud. It is very similar to the related species Apamea sublustris, which is also covered in related references.
