About Anurogryllus arboreus Walker, 1973
Description: Like other short-tail crickets in its genus Anurogryllus, adult Anurogryllus arboreus is a pale brown cricket with a vestigial ovipositor. When it first reaches maturity, the adult has wings, but it sheds these wings soon after maturing and becomes flightless for the rest of its life. Taxonomy and distribution: At one point, nearly all short-tailed crickets in the United States were classified as the species Anurogryllus muticus, which was thought to have a range stretching from Canada to most of South America. In a 1973 revision of the genus Anurogryllus completed by T. J. Walker, Anurogryllus arboreus was split from Anurogryllus muticus as a separate species, based on the calling behavior of males and specific morphological differences between the groups. Anurogryllus arboreus is primarily found along the Atlantic Coast of the United States from New Jersey to Florida, and extends westward to southeastern Texas. The only other Anurogryllus species found in the United States is Anurogryllus celerinictus, which occurs in the Florida Keys.
