About Anthus hellmayri Hartert, 1909
Hellmayr's pipit (scientific name Anthus hellmayri Hartert, 1909) is a medium-sized brown bird that weighs 18.6 grams. This species has pink legs, a light pink bill, bold streaking on its back, and only faint streaking on its breast and flanks. It resembles the closely related Short-billed pipit, which it can be mistaken for, but differs by having a plain white throat instead of a streaked throat, and by lacking a white submoustachial stripe. The eggs of Hellmayr's pipit are oval, white, and marked with brown speckles. Hellmayr's pipit has three separate disjunct populations distributed across the southern half of South America. One population occurs in the Andes, running from southern Peru through Bolivia to northwestern Argentina. A second population lives in the Andes of southern Argentina and Chile. The third, eastern subspecies A. h. brasilianus ranges from the Espinhaço Range in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, south into Uruguay and eastern Argentina, and west into the chaco of Paraguay. The species can be found at elevations from sea level up to 3,700 meters.
