The western violet-backed sunbird, also called Longuemare's sunbird, has the scientific name Anthreptes longuemarei. It is a bird species that belongs to the Nectariniidae family. This species is the most widely distributed member of the violet-backed sunbird superspecies. Its range covers most of tropical mainland sub-Saharan Africa in areas not occupied by other members of this superspecies. It occurs primarily in regions that contain mesic woodland.
