About Anthracothorax viridis (Audebert & Vieillot, 1801)
The green mango, scientifically named Anthracothorax viridis (Audebert & Vieillot, 1801), measures 11 to 14 cm (4.3 to 5.5 in) long and weighs approximately 7 g (0.25 oz). Males and females are similar in appearance, with the only difference being that the female has a small white spot behind the eye. Adult green mangos have emerald green upperparts, metallic blue-green underparts, and a metallic blue-black tail with white feather tips. Immature individuals have a brownish tint on the head and back. This hummingbird species is found only on Puerto Rico. It mainly lives in forests and plantations in the island's central and western mountains, and is most common at elevations between 800 and 1,200 m (2,600 and 3,900 ft). It is rare in Puerto Rico's coastal areas.
