About Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus, 1758)

Scientific name: Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus, 1758).

Identification: This species can be told apart from Anthophora plumipes by the color of its hind-tibial spurs. In Anthophora plumipes, these spurs are black; in Anthophora retusa, they are yellow or yellow-brown.

Distribution: Anthophora retusa is generally found in Western Europe and southern Sweden. In the United Kingdom, the species is believed to be restricted to only five sites, one of which is Seaford Head Nature Reserve.

Habitat: Anthophora retusa prefers sandy soils. It is most commonly found on coastal dunes and cliffs, and can also occur inland on commons and heathlands.
