About Anthocleista grandiflora Gilg

Anthocleista grandiflora Gilg is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Gentianaceae, commonly known as the forest fever tree. It is a tall, slender tree that can grow up to 30 meters in height, and it prefers to grow in forests located in high rainfall areas. Its leaves are very large, reaching sizes of up to 100 centimeters by 50 centimeters, and are arranged in terminal clusters. This species is native to the mountains and escarpments of eastern Africa, spanning from Uganda and Kenya in the north down to South Africa and Eswatini in the south. Within Zimbabwe, it is restricted to the Eastern Highlands. In South Africa, it grows mostly along rivers in and below the escarpment, and occurs less often in lowveld riparian fringes. Anthocleista grandiflora is the only member of the Gentianaceae family that grows to full tree size in South Africa.
