About Anthocharis scolymus Butler, 1866
Anthocharis scolymus, commonly called the yellow tip, is a butterfly belonging to the subfamily Pierinae. Its native range covers Eastern Asia, including East China, Korea, and Ussuri, where it is a common species; it is also occasionally found in Japan. The apex of its forewing is elongated and falcate, meaning sickle-shaped. Both upper and lower wing surfaces are white. The upper side of the forewing has dark apical markings and a black median spot, while the apex of the hindwing bears a black spot. Males additionally have a moderately large orange spot in the apical area of the forewing; this orange spot occasionally appears in females as the newly described form ab. virgo. This butterfly produces one brood per year and is commonly found in swampy areas. Its larvae feed on various cress species, including Draba, Descurainia sophia, Arabis hirsuta, Cardamine impatiens, and Rorippa.
