About Anthemis maritima L.

Anthemis is a genus of aromatic flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. It is closely related to the genus Chamaemelum, and like Chamaemelum, Anthemis species are commonly known as chamomile. Some Anthemis species are also called dog-fennel or mayweed. Members of the genus Anthemis are native to the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia, stretching east as far as Iran. A number of Anthemis species have become naturalized in the United Kingdom and other regions outside their native range. There are approximately 100 recognized species in the Anthemis genus. Anthemis species act as food plants for the larvae of some Lepidoptera species. These include Orthonama obstipata (The Gem) and Bucculatrix anthemidella, a leaf-mining moth whose larvae feed exclusively on Anthemis tinctoria. Several Anthemis species and cultivars are grown in gardens for ornamental use. Two entries, A. punctata subsp. cupaniana and Anthemis tinctoria 'E.C. Buxton', have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
