About Anoplolepis steingroeveri (Forel, 1894)
Anoplolepis steingroeveri is an ant species, commonly called the black pugnacious ant. It is native to southern Africa, and is found in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, and Namibia. Worker individuals of this species look similar to the darker color morphs of the closely related common pugnacious ant, Anoplolepis custodiens. Unlike A. steingroeveri, A. custodiens has a chequerboard-like dark pattern on its gaster. This pattern forms because pubescent hairs on the two sides of the gaster lie in different directions, which causes light to reflect to produce the patterned appearance.
