About Anoplius viaticus

Anoplius viaticus is a large species of spider-hunting wasp that measures approximately 14 millimetres (0.55 inches) in length. Its head and thorax are black; the propodeum, which is fused to the thorax, bears erect black hairs. The first three abdominal tergites are red with black rear margins, while the rest of the abdomen is black. Across its African range, this species displays considerable variation, and Arnold described a number of distinct varieties. Most notably, the extent of red colouration on the abdomen varies: some specimens have the first two or three tergites that are entirely red or orange.
