About Anolis roquet (Bonnaterre, 1789)

Anolis roquet, commonly known as the Martinique anole, Martinique's anole, or savannah anole, is a species of anole lizard. This species is endemic to the Caribbean Lesser Antilles island of Martinique. Across different regions of Martinique, Anolis roquet varies in both color and body shape, a pattern that reflects adaptation to local habitats and some degree of separation between distinct populations. The dorsal surface of this lizard ranges in color from green to gray-green, brown, or gray-brown, and some populations also have patches of blue-green coloration. Ventral and dewlap coloration also varies between populations. Common markings on Anolis roquet include dark marbling, spots, and chevrons, while light markings include stripes along the flanks. It is unusual among anoles for being capable of vocalization: it produces a squeaking sound when captured. Six recognized subspecies of Anolis roquet are currently recognized: Anolis roquet roquet (Lacépède, 1788), Anolis roquet caracoli Lazell, 1972, Anolis roquet majolgris Lazell, 1972, Anolis roquet salinei Lazell, 1972, Anolis roquet summus Lazell, 1972, and Anolis roquet zebrilus Lazell, 1972. The Barbados anole (A. extremus) was formerly classified as a subspecies of Anolis roquet.
