About Anolis polylepis Peters, 1874

This species of anole lizard is brown with white speckles, and has an orange-yellow dewlap that extends from its throat. This dewlap is made of erectile cartilage. Structures on the toes of these lizards let them cling to a wide range of different surfaces using van der Waals force. Their tails can break off at specialized segments, a trait they use to escape predators or get free during fights. After detaching, the separated tail will continue to wriggle strongly for several minutes. This ability to self-amputate a body part is called autotomy. These anoles are diurnal, meaning they are active during the daytime.
