About Anodonta nuttalliana I.Lea, 1838
Anodonta nuttalliana, commonly called the winged floater, has a thin shell that is elliptical or ovate in shape. The dorsal (back) region of the shell forms a distinct, prominent wing-like shape. The nacre (inner shell layer) of this species is white or has a blue-tinged color. Mature individuals can reach a maximum size of 4.25 inches, equal to 10.8 centimeters. This species lives buried in the sandy or muddy bottom of lakes and rivers, and it is most commonly found at low elevations. Its confirmed range includes California, Oregon, Washington, and the southern portions of British Columbia. Historical records of this species from Utah have an uncertain current status.
