About Annona montana Macfad.
Annona montana Macfad. is a tree similar to Annona muricata, but with a more spreading crown and glossy leaves. It is slightly hardier than Annona muricata and produces fruit year-round. Mature plants can tolerate brief temperature drops as low as 24 °F (−4 °C). Its pollen is released as permanent tetrads. The fruits are nearly round, with dark green skin covered in many short fleshy spines, and reach about 15 centimetres (5.9 in) in length. The yellow, fibrous, aromatic pulp is sour and bitter, and contains numerous light-brown, plump seeds. Annona montana has a history of use as a traditional medicine. In the wild, Annona montana grows at altitudes ranging from 0 metres (0 ft) to 650 metres (2,130 ft). Its natural distribution includes the West Indies in the Caribbean; Costa Rica and Panama in Central America; Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil in South America; and southern Florida in the United States.
