About Annona coriacea Mart.
Annona coriacea Mart., commonly called araticum in Portuguese, is a fruit tree native to Brazil. Its native range covers the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Pantanal ecoregions, where it usually grows in scrublands and savannahs, and is sometimes cultivated in orchards. This species typically grows 3 to 6 meters tall with a globose crown. It bears simple leaves and terminal flowers that develop into edible fruits; young fruits are densely covered in hairs. Its strongly scented flowers are mainly pollinated by beetles during the night. The wood of Annona coriacea is used for construction and making toys. This plant is documented in Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius' Flora Brasiliensis. The tree is vulnerable to infestation by the Mediterranean fruit fly.
