Anisotome latifolia Hook.fil. is a large, robust perennial herb that reaches up to 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) in height. Its leathery basal leaves measure 300–600 millimeters (12–24 inches) long and 100–200 millimeters (3.9–7.9 inches) wide. The leaves are 2-pinnate, and bear 5 to 7 pairs of leaflets that range in color from dark green to yellow-green. The inflorescence axis can grow up to 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall, with a diameter of 10–15 millimeters (0.39–0.59 inches) at its first node. The flowers of this species range in color from off-white to creamy pink. Flowering occurs between October and February, while fruiting takes place from January to March. This species is endemic to the subantarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands of New Zealand, where it forms a distinctive part of the local megaherb community. It grows from coastal areas up to the summits of the island ranges, found on peaty ground among tussocks and other megaherbs. It grows more rarely under low forest. It is most abundant at lower altitudes, and in areas where vegetation is not browsed by introduced animals. In cultivation, Anisotome latifolia grows easily from fresh seed when planted in deep, peaty, permanently moist soil, but it cannot tolerate hot weather.
