About Anguis colchica (Nordmann, 1840)

Anguis colchica, commonly called the eastern slow worm, is a species of legless lizard belonging to the family Anguidae. It is found in eastern and northern Europe, as well as Asia. This species is easily mistaken for the common slow worm, because the two have very similar physical features and their native ranges overlap closely. Eastern slow worms primarily inhabit areas with partially closed forest or shrub vegetation. They are most frequently spotted on forest edges and forest clearings, and sometimes occur on tourist trails where they bask in the sun. The species uses stone piles, stone fences, coarse woody debris, and even the burrows of some rodents as hiding spots. They often enter gardens that lie near their natural habitat.
