About Andinobates opisthomelas (Boulenger, 1899)
Andinobates opisthomelas, commonly called the Andean poison frog, is a species of frog in the family Dendrobatidae, and it is endemic to Colombia. This terrestrial species lives in montane wet forests, where it is typically found on leaf litter or near the bases of trees. It can occupy a wide variety of forest environments, including mature forest, forest fragments, and some types of degraded areas. It has been recorded at elevations ranging from 530 to 2200 meters above sea level. For reproduction, female Andean poison frogs lay their eggs on leaf litter. After the eggs hatch, the male frog carries the newly hatched tadpoles on his back to water sources, such as the water that collects in bromeliad plants.
