About Ancula gibbosa (Risso, 1818)

Ancula gibbosa is a species of goniodorid nudibranch. It has a translucent white body with processes tipped in yellow or white. This species was first described from Nice, France, in the Mediterranean Sea. It has a broad geographic range, extending from the Mediterranean along the Atlantic coast to Norway, Greenland, and Iceland, and all the way across the Atlantic to New England on the North American coast. Ancula pacifica is currently considered to be a synonym of Ancula gibbosa, because it has multiple color forms that closely match Ancula gibbosa. Ecologically, Ancula gibbosa feeds exclusively on Ectoprocta. Reports of it feeding on a range of other sessile organisms actually refer to the substrate that the Ectoprocta it eats are attached to, not actual food sources.
