Anax longipes Hagen, 1861, commonly called the comet darner, is a large species of dragonfly. It has a green thorax and bright red abdomen; females of the species have a brownish abdomen patterned with blue spots. Comet darners live in shallow lakes and ponds that typically have extensive grass beds and contain no fish. Their range covers the eastern United States, including Missouri, Michigan, and New England, with some individuals found even further north of this area.
