About Anax amazili (Burmeister, 1839)

Anax amazili, commonly known as the Amazon darner, is a fairly large dragonfly species. Adult Amazon darners measure between 70 and 74 millimeters in total length, with hindwings ranging from 48 to 52 millimeters long. This dragonfly has a green face marked by a single dark triangle on the top of its frons. Its abdomen is mostly brown, but the first and second abdominal segments are the same green color as its thorax. Large basal spots on the abdomen, which range from blue to green between individual dragonflies, create a ringed appearance on the abdomen. As a wide-ranging tropical species, the Amazon darner is distributed from the southern United States south all the way to Argentina. It lives in open ponds and marshes, and is most often found in temporary wetlands.
