About Anas nesiotis (J.H.Fleming, 1935)

Anas nesiotis, formally described by J. H. Fleming in 1935, is commonly known as the Campbell teal or Campbell Island teal. This is a small, flightless, nocturnal species of dabbling duck in the genus Anas, and it is endemic to New Zealand's Campbell Island group. It is sometimes treated as conspecific with the brown teal. Its plumage is similar to that of the Auckland teal: overall dark sepia, with the head and back tinged with green iridescence. Males have a chestnut breast, while females are entirely dark brown. Its natural habitat is tussock grassland dominated by Poa tussock grass, ferns, and megaherbs. This species also makes use of the burrows and pathways created by petrel species that nest on the islands. In the wild, Campbell teal appear to be territorial, and they likely feed on amphipods and insects. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies this species as vulnerable.
