About Anacampseros retusa Poelln.
Anacampseros retusa Poelln. has a short, thick caudex. Its branching stems grow to approximately 4 cm long, and lie low or level with the ground. Its leaves are not permanently hairy or felted, though they may sometimes bear an indistinct tomentum. The leaves are dark green, densely packed, obovate, and compact retuse; they are over one and a half times wider than they are thick, and reach up to 17 mm in length. Its flowers have pink, thinly ovate petals and 20 to 25 stamens, and are borne on a short inflorescence. Similar smooth-leaved Anacampseros species, such as Anacampseros lanceolata and Anacampseros telephiastrum, differ from Anacampseros retusa in having leaves over 18 mm long, and flowers with broadly ovate petals and 30 to 45 stamens. Anacampseros retusa has a long but narrow distribution range. It grows in southern Namibia and the western Namaqualand region of South Africa, extending south as far as the Ceres Karoo and Worcester in the Robertson Karoo, and reaches slightly into the northern Overberg region. It co-occurs with several related Anacampseros species, and favors specific habitat conditions. It occupies areas that are slightly more arid than the habitats where Anacampseros lanceolata grows, but tends to be replaced by related Anacampseros telephiastrum in even more arid locations.
