About Amphilophus labiatus (Günther, 1864)

Scientific name: Amphilophus labiatus (Günther, 1864)

Colouration of wild Amphilophus labiatus specimens is variable. Most individuals range from grey to greyish green, but pink, red, or white specimens also exist. Black pigmentation in the form of spots or bands is also common. Some specimens have enlarged lips; this trait is thought to be tied to specific food preferences in the species' natural habitat, and it disappears when individuals are kept in captivity. Like most cichlids, Amphilophus labiatus provides advanced brood care. This species forms monogamous pairs that spawn on flattened rocks or logs.
