About Amblyeleotris steinitzi (Klausewitz, 1974)
Steinitz' goby, scientifically named Amblyeleotris steinitzi (Klausewitz, 1974), reaches a maximum total length of 13 cm (5.1 in). It has protruding eyes and a long, narrow body. Its base body colour is white, marked with around five broad, transverse reddish-brown bands, with fine pale yellow lines between these bands. Its dorsal fin is speckled with small orange spots, and contains seven spines and twelve soft rays. The anal fin contains one spine and twelve soft rays. This species occurs in shallow waters of the Red Sea, the adjacent western Indian Ocean, the Chagos Archipelago, Mauritius, the Marshall Islands, the Seychelles, southern Japan, and the Great Barrier Reef. It typically inhabits sandy substrates on reef flats, outer lagoons, estuaries, and bays, and can be found at depths down to 43 metres (141 ft).
