About Amaurobius ferox (Walckenaer, 1830)
Body length for female Amaurobius ferox ranges from approximately 11 to 16 mm. Males of the species are slightly smaller and more slender, with a body length ranging from 8 to 10 mm. This spider is very dark in overall color, with primary coloration including black, brown, dark red, and tan. It has a rounded abdomen that bears pale light yellow markings arranged in a unique pattern, which is often described as resembling a skull-like mask or a delicate skeletal pattern. Amaurobius ferox is most commonly found near human-made structures. It prefers dark locations, such as under logs or inside cellars, and often lives in moist, shaded crevices, including under stones or along crumbling walls. In spring, adult males are frequently found indoors as they wander searching for mates, while adult females can be found both indoors and outdoors at any time of year. This species is native to Europe and distributed across much of the continent, and it has been introduced to all three countries of North America, as well as some Eastern European locations including Turkey. It is rare in Northern Europe, where temperatures are too low for it to survive.
