This tree fern species is currently classified as Sphaeropteris australis, with accepted synonyms including Alsophila leichhardtiana and Cyathea leichhardtiana. It is commonly known as the prickly tree fern, and belongs to the tree fern family Cyatheaceae. It is native to eastern Australia, occurring naturally in the states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. It is a common species that grows in moist locations, within rainforests and adjacent areas. Mature plants reach between 1 and 7 metres in total height. It can be identified by its thin, prickly trunk that measures 5 to 15 centimetres wide. Its sori do not have true indusia, and a ring of scales grows at the base of each sorus. Its fronds can grow up to 3 metres long, and its stipe is approximately 20 centimetres in length.
