About Alnus oblongifolia Torr.
Alnus oblongifolia Torr., commonly called Arizona alder, is a large alder species that can reach a maximum height of 72 feet (22 meters). It is native to the southwestern United States and northern Sonora, Mexico. Its range extends across Arizona into the mountain ranges of western New Mexico. In central Arizona, its range stretches across the transition zone to the White Mountains region on the border of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. Outside of this range extension from central Arizona, the species only occurs in scattered isolated mountain localities across the rest of New Mexico. It is also found in two mountain regions in southern Arizona south of the Mogollon Rim, and in neighboring northern Sonora, in areas of the northern Sierra Madre Occidental cordillera near the southeast Arizona Madrean Sky Island ranges. Isolated mountain populations also exist in a region of southwest Chihuahua and neighboring northwest Durango, which are part of the eastern Sierra Madre Occidentals.
