About Allogona profunda (Say, 1821)
Allogona profunda, commonly called the broad-banded forestsnail, is a species of air-breathing land snail. It is classified as a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc, and belongs to the family Polygyridae. Adult broad-banded forestsnails reach roughly 15 millimeters in height, and their width is approximately twice this measurement. The snail has a helix-shaped shell, and a light gray body. Many individual specimens of this species have a red stripe on their shells. This snail inhabits forest environments, and it primarily lives on floodplain floors and similar associated habitats. Like its close related species, the broad-banded forestsnail is thought to feed mainly on fungi, which is why it is attracted to log mold. The species is distributed across North America, and occurs specifically in both the United States and Canada.
