About Allium obtusum Lemmon

Allium obtusum Lemmon, commonly called the red Sierra onion, grows from a bulb 1 to 2 centimeters wide, and produces a scape that ranges from 2 to 17 centimeters tall. Unlike the related species Allium campanulatum, the leaves of A. obtusum do not wither before its flowers bloom. At the top of the scape sits an umbel holding up to 60 flowers, and each individual flower measures 4 to 12 millimeters across. Its tepals are white, purple, or pink with dark purple midveins. The anthers are yellow or purple, and the pollen is purple.
