About Alcedo semitorquata Swainson, 1823

Alcedo semitorquata Swainson, 1823, commonly called the half-collared kingfisher, is a medium-sized kingfisher. It measures approximately 18 cm (7.1 in) in length and weighs between 35 and 40 g (1.2–1.4 oz). This species has blue upperparts, a white throat, and pale orange underparts. Its crown features alternating bands of light blue and dark blue, and a creamy white stripe runs along each side of the neck. Dark blue patches on both sides of the neck form the half-collar that gives the species its common name. The legs and feet of the half-collared kingfisher are red. The two sexes are very similar in appearance, but can be distinguished by bill coloration: the male's bill is entirely black, while the female has red coloring at the base of her lower mandible.
