About Agrotis vestigialis Hufnagel, 1766
The wingspan of Agrotis vestigialis ranges from 30 to 35 mm. Its forewing is greyish ochreous, marked with olive-fuscous shading that varies with whitish areas. The stigmata are large and outlined in black; the claviform stigma is elongate, while the orbicular and reniform stigmata have fuscous centers surrounded by a pale ring. The orbicular stigma is small, and often connected to the reniform stigma. A submarginal line is preceded by black dentations. The hindwing is white, with brownish veins and a brownish margin. Females are always darker, and their hindwings are entirely brownish. In the typical form, all markings are distinct against a pale grey ground. The aberration sagittiferus Haw. differs only by having a dark fuscous ground. Aberration clavis Esp. has a pale reddish ochreous ground. Forms with markings that are more or less obscured also differ in coloration this way: aberration signata has a pale grey ground, while aberration trigonalis Esp. is a small fuscous form with large stigmata and a dark outer margin. Aberration nigra Tutt is blackish fuscous, with the course of the median vein appearing pale. In aberration lineolata Tutt, the wedge-shaped markings that usually only occur on the submarginal area extend all the way through to the outer margin.
