About Agrotis ripae Hübner, 1823
Agrotis ripae Hübner, 1823 has a wingspan of 32–42 mm. Its forewings are rufous brown or rufous grey, mixed with white. A costal streak and the veins of the forewing are whitish; the forewing stigmata are outlined in brown, with the center of the reniform stigma being dark; the marginal area of the forewing is often paler. The hindwing is white in males, while in females the veins and margin are grey. This species is associated with seacoast habitats, or can survive in wastelands that were once washed by the sea. It has been recorded in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Mongolia, Siberia, and Egypt. Agrotis ripae is a remarkably variable species. The main described forms are as follows: ab. nebulosa Stph. is a pale grey form, with the costa, base, and outer margin fuscous; desertorum Bsd., now classified as a full species, found in southern Russia, Siberia and Egypt, is grey with dark, distinct lines and stigmata; in brunnea Tutt the ground colour is deep reddish ochreous with fuscous lines and stigmata; grisea Tutt is dark slaty grey with obscured markings, and has a row of small whitish subterminal dots; ab. desillii Pierret is a reddish-grey form, sometimes mixed with yellowish, with well-developed markings; albicosta Tutt is similar to desillii, but additionally has a white costal streak; finally, there are two nearly white forms: ab. weissenbornii Frr., which is whitish with stigmata outlined in black, and ab. obotritica Schmidt, which is chalk-white with only a few traces of lines and stigmata.
