About Agonopterix ocellana Fabricius, 1775

This moth species, Agonopterix ocellana, is relatively easy to identify through a specific combination of black, white, and rufous (red-brown) markings in the center of its pale sandy brown forewings. The wingspan of the adult moth measures between 19 and 22 mm. Meyrick's detailed description notes that the forewings are whitish-ochreous, with a slight fuscous tinge and more or less black sprinkling. The first discal stigma is black mixed with red, preceded by a similar matching dot positioned obliquely above it, which is sometimes connected directly to the stigma. The second discal stigma is white with red edging. Between and above these two stigmas sits a dark fuscous spot that has red edging along its lower edge. Small blackish dots run along the terminal edge of the forewing. The hindwings are fuscous-whitish in colour. The larva is pale green with black dots and a yellowish-brown head. This species produces one generation per year, hibernates in the adult life stage, and can be encountered throughout the year. Adults are attracted to light. Agonopterix ocellana is distributed across the whole of Europe.
