About Agelaioides badius fringillarius (Spix, 1824)
Description and behavior: This subspecies has an approximate total length of 18 cm (7 inches). Its overall plumage is ashy-brown, with contrasting black lores and rufous wings. Compared to the base species, the taxon fringillarius has more black on the face and is more rufescent overall, with less ashy coloration. It is a social bird, commonly observed in small groups. Unlike true cowbirds of the genus Molothrus, this species is not a brood parasite. The screaming cowbird, however, is a brood parasite that targets this grayish baywing. While adult screaming cowbirds are overall blackish, juvenile screaming cowbirds closely resemble grayish baywings. Habitat and status: This bird occurs across a wide range of semi-open habitats, including scrub and light woodland. It is generally fairly common, and is therefore classified as Least Concern by BirdLife International and the IUCN.
