About Agave margaritae Brandegee
Agave margaritae Brandegee forms small rosettes that grow in sparse offshoots. Its pointed leaves are thick and fleshy, with a shape ranging from oval to broadly lanceolate. Leaves are variably arranged, colored bright yellow-green, measuring 10 to 25 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. Leaf margins are variably serrated and form a brown horny edge. Leaf tips are 2 to 3 cm long, colored from brown to grey. Its panicle inflorescences grow 2 to 3.5 meters high. Bright yellow flowers, 45 to 50 mm long, grow on loose, variably arranged branches in the upper half of the inflorescence. The flower tube is 10 to 14 mm long. Blooming occurs from June to July. Elongated three-chambered seed capsules are 3 to 5 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. Black, variably shaped seeds are 4 to 5 mm long and 0.5 mm thick. This species is endemic to Baja California Sur, northwestern Mexico, where it occurs only on Magdalena Island (its type locality) and Isla Santa Margarita, located in Magdalena Bay on the Pacific coast of the state. It grows in association with Echinocereus barthelowanus.
