About Agave macroacantha Zucc.
Agave macroacantha Zucc. forms a medium-sized leaf rosette. This rosette may grow from the plant base, or develop on a very short stem. Its leaves are succulent, greyish-green, and reach a maximum length of 1.8 feet. Each leaf ends in a sharp black spine that grows up to 1.2 inches long at the tip. The plant produces small grey and red flowers, which grow in clusters on sturdy stems that can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height. For cultivation, this species prefers a dry, sunny, hot location during summer. Starting in early autumn, it requires a cooler, well-lit growing space. It needs regular watering during summer, and only minimal watering during winter. It grows well in a large pot with loose, gravelly soil. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for cultivation in the United Kingdom.
