About Agave bovicornuta Gentry
Agave bovicornuta Gentry is a plant species in the Agave genus, native to mountainous areas of the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Sonora, and Sinaloa. Its common name Cowhorn Agave, along with its specific epithet, refers to the prominent red spines that grow along the edges of its leaves. Another common name for this species is "lechguilla verde". This plant grows as a solitary rosette and does not produce suckers. Yellowish-green flowers grow on a stalk that can reach up to 150 centimeters in height. The Tarahumara peoples, who inhabit the native range of this plant, sometimes eat its leaves, though they regard it as inferior to other Agave species. Agave bovicornuta is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Even though it has a wide overall distribution, its populations are small and isolated, and are threatened by overcollection and harvest for food.
