About Agave angustifolia Haw.

Agave angustifolia, commonly called Caribbean agave, is an agave species native to Mexico and Central America. This plant is used both to produce mezcal and as an ornamental plant. The cultivar 'Marginata', which has white margins along its leaves, is a popular variety grown in botanical gardens and private backyards. It is very closely related to blue agave, Agave tequilana. Unlike Agave tequilana, which is used to make tequila, Agave angustifolia is used to make the distilled alcoholic beverage mezcal, and it is the predominant agave species cultivated in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
